A Promise Kept

Captured at the historic Southeast Lighthouse on Block Island, Rhode Island, this image came at the end of a stormy July day in 2023. Rain, gray skies, and heavy clouds had covered the island for hours before the sunset finally broke through and painted the horizon with color.

When I took this photograph, I knew my grandmother was nearing the end of her battle with Parkinson’s disease. The weight of that reality sat heavily on my heart as I stood there watching the sky come alive in the last 15 minutes of light. I remember taking in the moment, overwhelmed with emotion, knowing that difficult days were ahead.

Just two days later, she passed away in her home holding my hand.

My grandmother was a woman of deep and unwavering faith. Through years of struggle, pain, and uncertainty, her trust in God never faded. Looking back, this image reminds me that even in life’s darkest seasons, beauty can still break through the clouds.

The storm passed. The suffering ended. And a promise was kept.
